Welcome to the Learning Resources Centre at Ormiston Venture Academy
Every student and all staff automatically become members of the LRC at Venture when they join the Academy; the first step in our mission to equip students with the vital literacy skills needed to become effective 21st-century communicators within our local community and wider society.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go”
Located at the heart of the academy, the Learning Resource Centre has a powerful vision – to inspire and motivate every student to read for purpose and pleasure – a vision that we believe will support all of our students to achieve the ambitions that they so desire.
We know that reading is an integral part of students’ personal development; to become a confident reader is to become an effective independent learner and the LRC intends to unlock this chance for all students within the academy as part of its quest to put social justice at the forefront.
There are many ways in which the LRC builds confident and independent readers not least through our incredibly successful Accelerated Reader programme; a programme which offers students personalised reading goals and builds skills in literacy and comprehension which encourages students to take ownership of their own areas of development.
This mission to develop literate scholars within our school community is further enhanced through our Literacy Intervention Programme, Lexonik, helping us to close literacy gaps through specific targeted instruction. Our LRC Manager supports students by providing an intensive boost to existing literacy and vocabulary levels as together they enhance comprehension, fluency and word mastery.
Underpinning the educational purpose to the LRC is of course a hive of fun and engaging opportunities for our students throughout the year; our calendar of events is promoted widely to students with highlights such as World Book Day, our participation with the Carnegie Awards, Community Reading and much more. We see these events as an integral part of enabling meaningful partnerships with our local community, further supporting our students with opportunities that are rooted in locality.
The LRC welcomes students through its doors even after lessons have finished for the day offering students opportunities to practise further study through the use of our catalogue of fiction and non-fiction and dedicated computer suite.
We aim to build successful communicators to ensure that our students have the potential to thrive in their journey to future learning and employment.
