Research tells us that newly encountered knowledge is lost over time when there is no attempt to retain it. Over the course of a lesson, a day, a month, a year your child will encounter a significant amount of knowledge and we are determined to support your child in securing their long term memory of this knowledge so that it becomes durable and transferable across the curriculum, developing cumulatively robust knowledge and skills for future learning and employment.
One of the many ways in which we support students to secure their long term memory of knowledge is through the provision of Venture Vitals: The Book of Knowledge.
Venture Vitals is a learning resource which is issued to students half-termly and contains the knowledge organisers for all subjects. A knowledge organiser is one or two pages for a subject, containing the essential knowledge that all students must learn to ensure they have a solid foundation on which to build future learning.
Venture Vitals also outlines a number of strategies students should use to help them engage with and learn the essential knowledge. Your child will receive ongoing training on how to use these strategies, and, just in case a reminder is needed, there are guidelines and links to video clips for each strategy within the opening pages of Venture Vitals. These strategies will support your child to recall and retain knowledge during their time with us at Venture and will also give them a toolkit to use post-16.
To support your child using these strategies we have created some short tutorials:
Your child will bring a paper copy of their Venture Vitals home at the start of each half term. An electronic version can also be accessed via our Venture ePortal (VeP).
Extended Learning in years 7 – 10 is designed to support students to engage with their Venture Vitals as a vehicle to retain and apply the essential knowledge across the curriculum.
