British Values

The Department for Education has introduced a statutory duty for schools to promote British Values more actively from September 2014, and to ensure they are taught in schools.

Ormiston Venture Academy is committed to serving our community. We recognise the multi-cultural, multi-faith and ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom. We understand the vital role we play in ensuring that groups or individuals within the academy are not subjected to intimidation or radicalisation by those wishing to unduly, or illegally, influence them.
At Ormiston Venture Academy we take very seriously our responsibility to prepare students for life in modern Britain. We ensure that the fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed, and lived out though the ethos of the and work of the academy.
  • The value of democracy
  • Individual Liberty
  • The rule of law
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of, those with different beliefs

All curriculum areas provide a vehicle for developing a comprehensive understanding of these concepts and, in particular, our Personalised Learning programme and RE curriculum provide excellent opportunities to deepen and develop appreciation of these core values. Students embrace these concepts with enthusiasm and demonstrate a good understanding of their application to their own lives.

We include more details about how each British value is embedded in our academy.
  • Democracy

We have an active and strong student voice through our Union of Venture Students (UVS) who are elected and drive forward their own initiatives. Students are regularly consulted both formally and informally about how their academy might be improved. An example of this is our termly UVS Baraza.

We cover democracy explicitly as part of our CASH curriculum and in subject specific content.

  • The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the Academy, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout all aspects of life at the academy. Students are taught the value and reasons behind our rules, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

Ground rules are established in all areas of the curriculum and students are encouraged to see the reasons for them. This includes during CASH lessons where sensitive issues are discussed. Computer Science lessons include discussion around data protection and e-safety.

Academy rewards and sanctions are clearly established and shared.

  • Individual Liberty

Independent thinking and learning are encouraged are they are frequent opportunities for students to grow in maturity and independence as they move through the academy. We educate and provide boundaries for students to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education.

We place emphasis on respecting difference and valuing creativity.

In our CASH curriculum we cover human rights and protected characteristics.

  • Mutual Respect

Respect is a Venture Virtue (?). We recognise the importance of not only respecting one another but also self-respect.

We have a clear antibullying policy which emphasises the importance of …

Our CASH curriculum includes topics on friendship; relationships in the community; and families and parenting.

  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

We welcome difference and diversity. We believe that exploring and understanding other people’s faiths and beliefs are rewarding experiences and help us understand our own faiths and beliefs better.

Students are familiar with the principles which different religions hold and explore the main world's religions as outlines in the Agreed Syllabus.

We visit other countries which provides additional insight into other cultures other than our own.
